How to play

Learn Color Sort in a minute

Every level starts with the colors mixed up across the tubes, plus two empty tubes to work with. Sort them so each tube holds four balls of one color.

Tap a tube to pick up the balls of one color on top of it.

Tap another tube to pour them in. It must be empty or have the same color on top.

Fill every tube with one color to solve the level and open the next one.

Rules

How a pour works

There is only one kind of move, and a few rules decide where it can go.

A tube holds four balls. A pour moves the balls of one color stacked on top, as many as fit in the other tube.
Same color or empty. Balls can only go onto a ball of their own color, or into an empty tube.
Sorted tubes are capped. A tube with four balls of one color gets a cap and stays as it is.
No clock pressure. Your time is shown when you solve a level, but nothing runs out.

Made for a thumb on a phone, and just as quick with a mouse or a keyboard.

Tap and tap: tap a tube to lift its top balls, then tap where they should go. Tap the same tube again to put them back. You can also drag from one tube to another.
Undo: takes back your moves one at a time, a restart included.
Restart: starts the level again from its first position.
Hint: shows a pour that still leads to a solution.
Dead ends: when the tubes can no longer be sorted, the game tells you right away, so you can undo instead of trying in vain.
Keyboard: arrow keys move between tubes and Enter or Space picks up and pours. The keys 1 to 9 pick a tube directly, U undoes, R restarts, H gives a hint and L opens the level list.
Symbols: every color also has its own symbol, so colors that look alike to you are still easy to tell apart.

The levels go on without end, and each one is the same board every time you play it.

Growing puzzles: level 1 has three colors, and a new color joins every other level until there are twelve, with two empty tubes throughout.
Always solvable: a solver checks each level before it is dealt.
Fewest moves: the game keeps your fewest moves for every level you solve, so a replay can beat it.
Pick any level: the Levels button lists every level you have opened, which is every level up to one past the highest you have solved.
Saved as you play: close the page and the level, its moves and its undo history are waiting when you come back.

Strategy

Strategies & tips

The early levels forgive almost anything. Later on, a little planning goes a long way.

To start with:

Keep an empty tube free. An empty tube is your workspace; filling both with different colors is the quickest way to a dead end.
Stack before you park. Pouring onto a matching color costs no space, so look for those pours before using an empty tube.
Finish one color at a time. A capped tube is out of the way for good.

Once that feels natural:

Look at the bottoms. The color at the bottom of a tube is the one that tube will most easily end up holding.
Count before you pour. Pouring three balls onto a tube with room for one splits your stack; sometimes that is worth it, often it is not.
Undo early. If the dead end notice appears, a move or two of undo is usually all it takes.

Can every level be solved?

Yes. Before a level is dealt, a solver finds a way to sort it, and boards it cannot solve are never used.

What if I get stuck?

Undo as many moves as you need, or restart the level. Hint shows a pour that still leads to a solution, and the game tells you when the tubes can no longer be sorted at all.

How many levels are there?

There is no last level. From level 18 on every level has twelve colors, each with its own board.

Can I replay a level?

Yes. Open Levels and pick any level you have opened. It deals the same board as before, so you can try it in fewer moves.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, in your browser on this device, with no account needed. Your level, a level in progress, and your fewest moves are all kept. Clearing your browser data removes them.
